Paper Owl

Materials

  • Coloured Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Circle to trace

Method
  1. Trace a circle on coloured paper.
  2. Fold two edges inward to make a sort of shallow 'V' shape, these are the wings-DO NOT GLUE
  3. Get a different coloured piece of paper and cut to fit under the wing, decorate  to show feathers or use glitter.
  4. Now glue the 'wings' down.
  5. Using coloured paper add detail such as a beak, eyes and legs.
  6. One idea is to trace three different sized circles, to make three different sized owls, and make a mobile. This is what I initially wanted to do but I ran out of time.

Sand Art

We did a theme week on deserts and one fun and successful activity was sand art. It's a great way to add some texture to kid's work. It can get a bit messy but nothing a vacuum cleaner can't handle. We did desert landscape pictures

Materials

  • Sand
  • Glue sticks
  • Coloured paper
  • Scissors

Method

  1. Using colours like yellow, orange and red create a desert scene.
  2. Apply glue to where you want your sand to stick. I think it is better to limit the area where you stick sand as it creates a better effect, but if they want to do more that's all good too.
  3. Quickly sprinkle sand on the glued areas and rub it in to make sure you get enough sand to stick.
  4. Shake off the excess into your sand tub, or if you are a child the table or floor.
  5. Stick on some detail such as cacti, camels, clouds or birds. Make it geographically specific to your area, if you live in a country with desert that is.

This one reminds me of the edge of Sahara, a massive dune looms in the distance.

Some of the kids decided that they didn't want to do deserts and wanted to do beaches instead.

Dot and Line Animal Pictures

Dot and Line Animal Pictures

Materials Needed

  • Animal Outlines
  • Different Coloured Paper
  • Markers
  • Glue
Method

  1. Either draw or print off some animal outlines. A simple Google search should let you find some. I imagine the animals you would use would be country specific so I wont post any links.
  2. Using different colours fill in the pictures with lines and dots that give the animal definition. (see below)
  3. Cut this picture out and glue it on some coloured card.
  4. Create a nature scene surrounding it using the same dot and line method you used to fill the animal in.
This activity of course doesn't need to be limited to animals but can incorporate a large number of themes.

Cactus Flower

Cactus Flower

Materials Needed

  • Polystyrene Bell Shape
  • Green, Yellow and Red tissue Paper
  • Match Sticks
  • Scissors
  • Glue
Method

  1. Cut the green tissue paper in to small sections and glue on to polystyrene bell shape.
  2. Wait until dried
  3. Stick in match sticks
  4. Create a flower to be placed on top. There are many ways to do this so have a couple of tries and see what woks best for you.
If you cannot find a polystyrene bell shape I think this could work well with just a toilet roll. It may be a bit harder to insert the match sticks, use a pin to create a hole first.

Spring Blossom Tree

Spring Blossom Tree

Materials Needed

  • Tissue paper - various bright colours
  • Tree branch
  • Scissors
  • PVA Glue
  • Glue Brush
  • Bucket
  • Sand

Method

  1. Cut the tissue paper into small squares, doesn't have to be exact.
  2. Put the tree branch in the bucket full of sand so it looks like a small tree.
  3. Scrunch up the tissue paper into small balls.
  4. Glue these balls onto the branch in the where every you can find a stable spot. You can then add not so scrunched up tissue paper as opened flowers.
This is a good ongoing project as you can only do so much in a day then you need to let it dry. It is good to have a couple of 'trees' of different colours it creates a great effect.
